The land we now call Turkey has always been a strategic area and has been occupied by many different civilisations over the ages. This course covers roughly the period from 600BCE to 1200CE. During that period the land was occupied by the Persians, invaded by Alexander and the Greeks and incorporated into the Roman Empire. The Romans gave way to the Byzantines who began to lose territory to the Turks and had to contend with the arrival of Crusaders from the west. The course will explore the history and archaeological remains from all of these periods.
