This module is mapped against A1 level in German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is for absolute beginners or students with very limited knowledge of the language. No previous knowledge of German is required. Through a variety of methods students will develop a very basic competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking German and an understanding of basic German grammar. At the end of this 12-week module students will have reached a low A1 proficiency level in the CEFR and will be able to carry out very simple everyday tasks in German. Students will be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. They will be able to introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know

This module is mapped against A1+ level in German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is for students who have completed Level 1 Beginners’ German or who have a German A1- level standard of the language in the CEFR. Through a variety of methods, students will further develop their basic competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking German and their understanding of elementary German grammar. At the end of this 12-week module, students will have reached an A1+ proficiency level in the CEFR and will be able to carry out simple tasks in German. Students will be able to understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of most needs in a day-to-day context: i.e.: shopping, going to restaurants, asking for and understanding directions… They will be able to interact and participate effectively in basic conversations. They will have an-understanding of many aspects of life and culture of German-speaking countries and the intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.

It is for students who have completed Level 2 Beginners’ German or have a German A1+ standard of the language in the CEFR. Through a variety of methods students will develop an elementary competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking German and an understanding of elementary German grammar. At the end of this 12-week module, students will have reached an A2- proficiency level in the CEFR and will be able to carry out everyday tasks in German and to attempt unfamiliar ones. Students will be able to follow and hold a simple conversation and function in daily life using the language: i.e.: shopping, traveling on public transport, giving directions… They will have a good understanding of life and culture of German-speaking countries and the intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.

This module is mapped against A2+ level in German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).  It is for students who have completed Level 3 Elementary German or have an A2- standard of the language in the CEFR, for example a GCSE. Through a variety of methods students will develop an upper elementary competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking German and an understanding of elementary German grammar. At the end of this 12-week module students will have reached an A2+ proficiency level in the Common European Framework of Reference and will be able to confidently carry out everyday tasks, including unfamiliar ones, express their opinions about familiar topics and function in basic professional contexts. They will have a good understanding of life and culture of German-speaking countries and the intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.

This module is mapped against B1 level in German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is for students who have complete level 4 Elementary German, or who have a B1- (lower intermediate) standard of the language in the CEFR, for example a GCSE* or a rusty AS- Level. Through a variety of methods students will keep developing an intermediate competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking German and an understanding of the German grammar. At the end of this 12-week module students will be able to connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences, events, dreams, and expectations and give their own opinion. They will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. They will have a good understanding of life and culture in German-speaking countries and intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.

This German language module is designed for students who have completed levels 5 and 6, and with a B1+ standard of the language in the Common European Framework of Reference. Through a variety of methods students will develop an advanced competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking German and an understanding of advanced German grammar. At the end of this 12 week module students will have reached a B2- proficiency level in the Common European Framework of Reference and will be able to understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar; read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints; interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible; present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest; write clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects related to their interests, such as an essay or report.
