Course DescriptionThis module is mapped against A1 level in Chinese according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is for absolute beginners or students with very limited knowledge of the language. No previous knowledge of Chinese is required. Students will develop a very basic competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking Arabic and an understanding of basic Chinese grammar. At the end of this module students will have reached a low A1 proficiency level in the CEFR and will be able to carry out very simple everyday tasks in Chinese. They will be able to introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have. They will be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. They will have a basic understanding of significant aspects of life and culture of the country and intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level. It is for students who have completed Level 1 Beginners’ Chinese or who have a Chinese A1- level standard of the language in the CEFR. Through a variety of methods, students will further develop their basic competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking Chinese and their understanding of elementary Chinese grammar. At the end of this 12-week module, students will have reached an A1+ proficiency level in the CEFR and will be able to carry out simple tasks in Chinese. Students will be able to understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of most needs in a day-to-day context: i.e.: shopping, going to restaurants, asking for and understanding directions… They will be able to interact and participate effectively in basic conversations. At the end of this 12-week module students will have reached an A2+ proficiency level in the Common European Framework of Reference and will be able to confidently carry out everyday tasks, including unfamiliar ones, express their opinions about familiar topics and function in basic professional contexts. They will have a good understanding of life and culture in China and the intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level. It is for students who have completed level 4 Elementary Chinese, or who have a B1- (lower intermediate) standard of the language in the CEFR, for example a GCSE* or a rusty AS- Level. Through a variety of methods students will keep developing an intermediate competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking Chinese and an understanding of the Chinese grammar. At the end of this 12-week module students will be able to connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences, events, dreams, and expectations and give their own opinion. They will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. They will have a good understanding of life and culture in China and intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level. It is for students who have completed Level 5 Intermediate Chinese or who have a B1 standard of the language in the CEFR, for example an AS* or a rusty A-Level. Through a variety of methods, students will keep developing an upper intermediate competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking Chinese and an understanding of Chinese grammar. At the end of this 12-week module, students will be able to briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans as well as narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or film and describe their reactions to it. They will be able to enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events) and to understand the main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.
