This module is mapped against B1+ level in French according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is for students who have completed Level 5 Intermediate French or who have a B1 standard of the language in the CEFR, for example an AS* or a rusty A-Level. Through a variety of methods, students will keep developing an upper intermediate competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking French and an understanding of French grammar. At the end of this 12-week module, students will be able to briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans as well as narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or film and describe their reactions to it. They will be able to enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events) and to understand the main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear. This French language module is designed for students who have completed level 6 or 7, and with a B2- standard of the language in the Common European Framework of Reference. Through a variety of methods students will develop an advanced competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking French and an understanding of advanced French grammar. At the end of this 12 week module students will have reached a B2 proficiency level in the Common European Framework of Reference and will be able to follow complex lines of argument and understand most TV news and current affairs programmes; read articles and reports expressing attitudes or viewpoints on contemporary problems as well as understand contemporary literary prose; interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options; write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.
