Professional Practice module (ARCH623) which runs from January – August 2026. The module is offered to year-out students in practice who have completed their undergraduate programme and gained exemption from RIBA Part 1.
Detailed Description
Over seven months (January – July), the module will provide resources to support you during your year out and assist with the production of your PEDR records. It is intended to provide context to many of the things that you are learning, observing and being involved with whilst in practice.
The topics to be covered are:
- Professionalism / The architect in business
- Clients, Stakeholders, Terms of Appointment the Design team.
- Procurement, Project Management, Health and Safety
- Fees
- The Legal Framework, Planning and Building regulations
- Construction Matters, Quality and cost control
- Contracts and Cost Control
The module is held online once a month. There will also be an in-person sessions held at Liverpool School of Architecture, 25 Abercromby Square in April. You are expected to attend this session on campus.
Each month you will receive a short reading list and details of a 600-word assignment, which could form part of your quarterly PEDR. Students of the module will be allocated to small study groups and encouraged to discuss the projects you are working on or observing for your monthly assignments. The conclusion of the course is an online exam which will take place in early August.
As part of the course, University of Liverpool will offer Professional Studies Advisor service.
The cost of the module is £300, that fee is refundable if you choose to return to study your MArch at University of Liverpool, are admitted onto the programme and confirm your place before the end of May. If you do choose to return to study MArch, and provided you have passed the course, the University will count it as prior learning and you will not be required to do Professional Practice ARCH408 in Semester 1 of MArch4.
