Using material culture and texts, this course will examine the lives of the workforce of ancient Egypt. Bureaucracy and the priesthood were the first professions. Linked to the latter were physicians, who used both practical and spiritual means to heal the sick. From the New Kingdom the military provided a vehicle for career advancement. This course will develop participants' knowledge of the skills, training, working conditions and career prospects of the ancient Egyptians.
