*NEW* Surgical Skills Day: Canine Perineal Hernia and Urethral Surgery for Urethral Obstruction

Key to developing proficiency in non-elective surgical procedures is access to hands-on practical time to hone our manual skills. Students enrolled on the perineal hernia/urethral surgery course will have the benefit of maximised laboratory time where these surgical procedures are performed on cadavers. The necessary theory and case management details are covered via a mixture of pre-recorded lectures and review lectures on the day.

Course Description

Course content is as follows:

Perineal hernia

·       Pre-view lectures: Perineal anatomy, local anaesthetic procedures and case investigations

·       Real-time lectures: Herniorrhaphy (hernia repair) using internal obturator muscle transposition, other surgical options, and managing complications

·       Hands-on surgical practice: perineal herniorrhaphy using internal obturator muscle transposition (cadaver surgery)

Urethral obstruction

·       Pre-view lectures: Diagnosis and initial management of urethral obstruction. Case-based decision making.

·       Real-time lectures: Urethrotomy and urethrostomy in the dog – anatomy and surgical technique

·       Hands-on surgical practice: Urethrotomy and urethrostomy in dogs (cadaver surgery)

 

 

Learning Outcomes:

• Demonstrate the surgical techniques required for meniscal exam and lateral suture for CCLD and trochleoplasty/tibial crest transposition for patella luxation.
