Course requirements: 

To be accepted onto this course, candidates must:

- be GDC Registered Dental Nurses

- have a current BLS certificate

- have Professional Indemnity cover

- have written confirmation from a supervising dentist that they take responsibility for overseeing the nurses training in the workplace.

Course Description

Aim

The aim of this course is to enable registered dental nurses to learn about the background of impression taking and undertake an accurate dentate impression under the prescription of a dentist, in a wide range of applications including bleaching trays, study models and mouth guards.

This course meets the new GDC requirements for enhanced CPD.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • List the Restorative procedures that require the use of dental impressions.
  • Explain the Health and Safety issues which should be taken into account when taking impressions.
  • Undertake a Patient Assessment to gauge whether they will be able to obtain a successful impression.
  • Explain complications which can arise as a result of taking impressions and how to deal with them.
  • List the use of different materials available for impression taking.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the different materials and their uses.
  • Present the different trays available for impression of a dentate arch. 
  • Select the correct size impression tray for an individual.
  • Achieve a sound impression of the dentition using alginate impression material.
  • Identify whether an impression is fit for its purpose.
  • Undertake appropriate infection control procedures for impression taking.
