Description

The 18th Heads of School Meeting of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) will take place in Liverpool. The theme of the event will be Inclusive Planning Education for Changing and Challenging times.

Planning theorists and educators have long grappled with the issue of what gives planning and planners legitimacy to ‘pronounce’ on the forms and outcomes of development that serves the public interest. The current political and societal climate with the rise of populist anti-truth movements in Europe and beyond presents challenges for professionals and their claims to possess forms of specialized knowledge. Under such conditions legitimacy for planning and the profession of planning can derive from the inclusivity of planning education and greater diversity of entrants to the planning profession to better reflect the societies that planning seeks to serve.

The 2025 AESOP Heads of School meeting in Liverpool will seek to foreground inclusive teaching that develops future planners’ capacity to work reflectively as practitioners in a world where consensus around matters of collective interest can be difficult to achieve and claims for the legitimacy of expert and professional knowledge are contested.
