Practical Skills

To manage emergency patients efficiently we need to apply both theory and hands-on practice. Students enrolled on this ‘practical skills in an ECC setting’ course will spend the afternoon in the laboratory where the practical aspects of emergency stabilisation are performed on cadavers. The necessary theory and case management details are covered via lectures on the day.

Course Description

Course content is as follows:

Hands-on practical procedures: 

·       Chest drain placement

·       Tracheostomy tube placement

·       Central line placement

·       Local anaesthetic blocks (intercostal, sacrococcygeal, epidural)

·       CPR

·       Intraosseous access for fluid resuscitation

Lectures:

·       Central line placement and management

·       CPR

·       Analgesia and anaesthesia for patients with urethral obstruction

·       Urethral catheterisation of male cats

·       Tracheotomy, tracheostomy tube management

·       Thoracocentesis and chest drain placement:

o   sedation and analgesia

o   placement and management

Cost: £495
