Course Information

Equine Anaesthesia

The course will provide insights into triage and stabilisation of equine emergencies that are commonly seen in equine ambulatory practice. 

The morning lectures will provide a practical approach to equine blood transfusion in the field, and strategies for stabilisation of a critical patient for travel.  The practical session in the afternoon will allow delegates to develop an approach to ultrasound of the acute abdomen and thorax and perform an emergency tracheostomy on a cadaver. In the afternoon we will have a panel discussion for disaster management with a range of surgical and medical specialists. We will finish the day with a discussion on controversial areas including what should and shouldn’t be done in the field.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop a theoretical and practical understanding of how to perform a blood transfusion in the  horse
  • Develop a theoretical and practical approach to stabilising a critical patient for travel
  • Develop practical skills in rapid ultrasonographic assessment of the thorax and abdomen in the field
  • Develop practical skills to perform an emergency tracheostomy in the field
  • Develop a pragmatic approach to equine disaster management
