On this course, we’ll explore ghost tales from the Medieval period to the modern day. We’ll see how concepts of the ghosts changed over time within the British context and how different beliefs and practices influenced the ghost story. The course will explore how and why ghost tales became popular and the way in which ghost stories reflect the societies that create them and offer a way of exploring contemporary anxieties, fears and tensions and of representing a haunting past which cannot be outrun.
