Over half a century ago Linda Nochlin, the late great American Art Historian provocatively asked, ‘Why have there been no great women artists’, her tongue in cheek essay sought to challenge the primacy of male artists within the canon of Western Art History. 50 years later and the role of women artists in story of Western Art is still overlooked, neglected or simply forgotten, this course considers the work of some of the most important female artists across the past 500 years during this 5 week course.
