Course Description

This workshop will cover the indications for and surgical techniques of urethrotomy and urethrostomy in the dog. Urethral obstruction in dogs, often due to calculi, is a common presentation in small animal practice and prompt, correct surgical management is essential for a successful outcome. By the end of the course delegates should have the knowledge to decide the most appropriate treatment for a urethral obstruction and to perform a urethrotomy or a scrotal urethrostomy.

 

Learning Outcomes

  • Assess and stabilise small animal patients suffering from urethral obstruction
  • Select and persorm appropriate imaging studies to make an accurate diagnosis for thecause of the obstruction
  • Using clinical reasoning select the most appropriate intervention for mangement of the obstruction
  • Practice these surgical techniques in the lab session
