Course Speakers:

Dr Laura Gartshore: Senior Lecturer & Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, FDS National Specialty Director, ISFE Examiner & Co-Lead for Critical Appraisal, President of the Education Research Group of International Association for Dental Research.

Ms Sarah McKernon: Senior Lecturer & Honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery.

The course is also supported by a team of NHS managers and leaders

Who Should Attend? 

The course is suitable for all trainees, including those planning on sitting ISFE, and those wishing to evidence management and leadership training and preparation in lieu of ISFE. It is equally suitable for consultants already in post and specialists and non-specialists who hold, or will hold, leadership positions in the NHS.

Course Description

Aim: Delegates will cover a wide range of learning outcomes to prepare them for management and leadership roles within the NHS. Teaching will be supported by extensive consideration of appropriate, real-life case studies that a consultant / NHS leader would commonly face. Delegates will have access to a range of resources such as policies, protocols and legislation and will participate in leadership and management scenarios.  These scenarios will allow delegates to consider their one-to-one on-the-spot approach, role and responsibilities within a small group setting and gain insightful, personalised feedback on their responses.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the event delegates will be able to:

·     Recognise approaches to managing others, including early identification of health/ behaviour / knowledge concerns, diagnostic pathways for escalation and support and local performance investigations.

·     Discuss risk assessment and risk management.

·     Outline appraisal, interview, and consultant job planning.

·     Explain key aspects of the role of the clinical leader, including leadership style.

·     Describe duty of candour and raising concerns.

·     Discuss the roles of the clinical director and the clinical lead.

·     Recount the principles of management and leadership in the NHS.

·     Outline the principles of, and contribute to writing, a business plan.

·     Identify reported perceptions of the NHS amongst the population of the UK.

·     Discuss illustrative scenarios.
