Considered one of Shakespeare’s ‘problem’ plays, it nonetheless is classed as a comedy in the 1623 Folio. There is a count, a countess, a lowly gentlewoman, games with rings, a clown, a feigned death and a bed-trick; yet underneath all the jollities is a serious examination of marriage, class, women’s desires, friendship and disloyalty, and the ‘price’ of virginity.
