Feline fracture repair: the pelvis and hindlimbs

This two-day CPD event is designed to enable delegates to plan and perform surgery to repair fractures of the feline tibia, femur and ilium. The workshop reflects our surgical CPD priorities: maximum practical time, Specialist tuition and competitive pricing. It is suitable for practitioners with a surgical interest who manage feline trauma cases. Delegates can tailor the procedures undertaken in the practical sessions to suit their learning needs. Each day begins with lectures followed by practical surgical sessions in the wet lab. Delegates will first learn fundamental techniques using synthetic bone models before applying them to cadavers.

Course Description

Procedures

·    The fundamentals of fracture planning, implant selection and implant application.

·    Femoral fractures: surgical approach; lateral plate fixation using compression and locking constructs; plate-rod constructs; femoral head and neck excision.

·    Tibial fractures: surgical approach; medial plating; orthogonal plating; external skeletal fixation.

·    Ilial fractures: surgical approach; plating of the ilial wing and body.

·    Additional procedures: delegates may request tuition and practical experience in other procedures, such as cross-pinning of the distal femoral physis or placement of a sacroiliac screw for SI luxation, according to individual learning needs.

Learning outcomes

This event will enable delegates to:

1.    Understand the principles of fracture description, fracture planning and implant selection for feline hindlimb and pelvic fractures.

2.    Understand the principles of locking and non-locking bone-plate constructs, external skeletal fixators, plate-rod constructs and orthogonal plating techniques.

3.    Perform safe and effective surgical approaches to the lateral femur, medial tibia and lateral ilium in the cat.

4.    Select and apply suitable fixation implants to stabilise feline fractures of the femur, tibia and ilium using the techniques described above.
