Course Description

Enjoy a journey around the British coast, exploring the practices of artists who formed experimental colonies to capture the light, sea, and character of local communities.

At the turn of the twentieth century, artists' colonies thrived, fueled by better transport, tourism, and the modern art market. These colonies fostered mutual support, shared studios, group sketching, art classes, and social gatherings.

Each week, we 'travel' to a different coastal location, from Newlyn and Lamorna to Staithes, Cullercoats, Cockburnspath, and Kirkcudbright, discovering the art produced in these dynamic landscapes.

The course aims to provide knowledge about this fascinating period in British art history by 'visiting' influential and experimental coastal art colonies and exploring the artists' subjects and techniques.

No prior knowledge is needed. Sessions are discussion-based and include guided visual analysis and research.
