Grafting is a form of propagating new trees or shrubs that is over 2000 years old.  It is still one of  of the main methods of propgating trees today. In bud grafting, a bud is taken from an existing variety of rose or tree fused onto a set of roots - the 'rootstock’. This allows a larger plant to be produced then taking a cutting and to benefit from the characteristics of the rootstock. Roses and trees, both fruit and ornamentals that you buy are produced this way.

Once you have got the hang of it, you can look forward to the satisfaction of growing your own rose or tree and for a fraction of what you would pay down at the nursery. Everyone will be able to take home a rose or rowan tree they have budded in class to grow at home!
