This module aims to introduce social science perspectives on the relationship between health, illness, healthcare, and society. Using key theoretical approaches from the social sciences, the module will provide different ways of understanding public health issues and how they are constructed.

Course Description

In this module students develop a thorough grounding in social science approaches in order to advance understanding of the relationships between health, illness, public health practice and society. Students will critically appraise and apply social science understanding to public health issues.

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate epistemological approaches to public health.
  • Critically evaluate social science concepts and their historical development.
  • Develop the skills to critically appraise public health issues using social science.
  • Be able to reflect critically on the importance of different social science perspectives for their own critical learning and practice around public health issues.
