In this module you will be introduced to the complex field of qualitative research. This module covers all aspects of qualitative research including: qualitative research theory and design, qualitative methodologies and methods, and analysis of qualitative data. The module gives you the opportunity to get to grips with the philosophy of qualitative research and also develop the skills to conduct and write-up your own piece of qualitative research.

Course Description

The aims of the module are:

  1. To introduce the philosophy of qualitative research and the different types of qualitative research methodologies for public health;
  2. To enable students to identify and conduct the major elements in qualitative research design and to provide them with knowledge of and basic skills in using qualitative methods

During the module you will have a chance to:

  • Read about and critically engage with the theory and practice of qualitative research;
  • Engage in discussions with specialists in the field of qualitative research;
  • Examine some of the main methods used in qualitative research;
  • Practice and apply those methods by working through group and individual exercises;
  • Describe, justify and evaluate the use of different qualitative methods in public health research.
