Course Description

The Imperial Roman Army was the first professional Roman military force, and one of the mightiest in the ancient world, present everywhere from the heart of the empire in Rome to the furthest reaches and frontier zones. This course explores all the facets of the Roman military, from its organisation, training, and role on the battlefield, to daily frontier life, interaction with civilians, and the artefacts used by Roman soldiers. This course aims to provide students with a detailed discussion of the Imperial Roman army and its operation, and a better understanding of the role the military played in the Roman world more widely. This course would suit anyone with an interest in the Roman army or the Roman frontiers, and no prior knowledge is needed.
