Course Description

This two-day CPD workshop is an excellent opportunity for vets to update and refresh their knowledge of equine gastrointestinal disease.  It is designed for delegates working mainly, but not necessarily exclusively, in equine practice and for those working towards a RCVS CertAVP.

The course looks at the approach and management of cases using a problem orientated format. Both days will be divided between interactive lectures and hands-on practical sessions which allow you to practice and gain confidence with common diagnostic techniques. Delegate numbers will be limited to 16 to allow maximum exposure during practical sessions.

Day 1: Chronic abdominal disease

Day 1 looks at chronic abdominal disease with lectures on approach and management of recurrent colic, ulcers and gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease and equine endoparasites. The afternoon practical includes a hands-on gastroscopy session and a session on diagnosis and treatment of equine liver disease.

Day 2 Acute abdominal disease - intensive care on the yard and in the clinic.

Day 2 looks at acute abdominal disease with lectures on early recognition of surgical colic cases including advising the client on cost and prognosis, recognition and treatment of endotoxaemia/systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and a guide to abdominal ultrasonography. The afternoon practical includes a hands-on abdominal ultrasound session with guidance from experienced specialists and an interactive session on fluid therapy focusing on both enteral and intravenous routes.
