This one day course is aimed at equine clinicians with an interest in equine internal medicine wishing to advance their diagnostic skills and approach to cases. This one day course will provide tips on collecting samples and interpreting laboratory data. There will be practical hands on sessions on liver biopsy, muscle biopsy and diagnostic cytology with the day concluding with delegates testing their clinical reasoning in an interactive voting session using case examples.

 

Learn how to select the most appropriate tests and how to handle the samples to maximise the accuracy of the information you obtain.

 

  • Which tests give us the best prognostic data for liver disease?

  • Which acute phase proteins are more useful to monitor septic patients and under what circumstances are the results inaccurate?

 

Answers to these questions and more plus lots of practical tips!

 

Lectures – How to interpret clinical pathology:

 

  • Inflammatory disease and acute phase proteins; haempoietic disorders and anaemia

  • Endocrine disease and prognostic indicators of liver disease

  • Myopathic mysteries – raised CK/AST, what next?

 

Practical sessions:

  • The equine liver – ultrasonography and obtaining biopsies

  • Muscle biopsy

  • Cytology in practice
