This day school will use the history of one neighbourhood to reveal key aspects of the history of the city of Liverpool as a whole. The patterns of migration to the city and the impact they had on the politics, living conditions and social structure of the city will be examined. Other topics include: the industry of the area, the Board schools dispute of 1830s which contributed substantially to the patterns of sectarianism and denominational education in the following century, the culture of the Carling family, the Women's Refuge in Paul Street and the activity of Irish republicans in the 1920s, who had a base on Bevington Bush.
