The contemporary nation-state is facing many challenges from beyond, within and across its state boundaries. In this course we will look at these challenges, particularly at the EU and sub-state nationalisms in the UK and Spain.  We will also explore transnational religious forces in the Middle East and historical and political factors influencing eastern European nation states. Questions covered will include: What does Brexit mean for the European Union? The UK: from devolution to end of union? Independence for Catalonia? Is the nation state secure in Eastern Europe? Are national borders disappearing in the Middle East?
