The course examines the role of Jerusalem as a holy city for the three monotheistic faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Covering 4000 years it compares Canaanite, Israelite, Second Temple, Byzantine, Islamic, Crusader, Ottoman and modern Jerusalem and the ways in which the city functions as emblematic in the various traditions. It will explore the origin and development of ideas about the city of Jerusalem and reflect upon the reasons for the emergence of such ideas whilst examining the continuities and discontinuities in the varying traditions.
